چکیده
MALINDA SCHAEFER ZARSKE is a doctoral candidate at the University of Colorado Boulder in engineering education. Her research interests include engineering student learning, diversity and recruitment. Her current research is centered on the impacts of project-based service-learning on student identity, recruitment, and retention in engineering. She is a Co-Director of the Engineering for American Communities student organization, on the development team as well as a content editor for the TeachEngineering.org digital library, and has co-created and co-taught engineering elective courses for both high school and undergraduate students through CU-Boulder’s Integrated Teaching and Learning Program. A former middle and high school math and science teacher, she received her MAT in secondary science from the Johns Hopkins University and her MS in civil engineering from CU-Boulder.

An Industry-University Partnership Case Study
At many universities, senior undergraduate mechanical engineers work in teams on industrysponsored capstone design projects. These projects provide an excellent opportunity for students to synthesize their courses, work with the more realistic deadlines and expectations of industry, and interact with company representatives. It also give industrial partners a chance to become educational partne...

Software engineering education has long sought to provide students with real-world software development and professional experience. The use of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) projects is one attractive approach for providing students with easy access to a complex, ongoing project of size that is supported by a professional community. Humanitarian FOSS (HFOSS) projects hold the additional ...

A new project-based learning (PBL) curriculum has begun in northeastern Minnesota as a collaboration between a community college, Itasca Community College, and a state university, Minnesota State University, Mankato. The Iron Range Engineering (IRE) model is a unique, undergraduate problem-based learning engineering program. Students at IRE, who are mostly graduates of Minnesota's community col...
متن کاملAc 2011-2776: Do Students Gather Information to Inform Design Decisions? Assessment with an Authentic Design Task in First-year Engineering
Information gathering is a very important aspect of the design process, one that is used continuously throughout the project to make informed design decisions. This study reports the development of an authentic instrument used to assess skills related to information gathering in first-year engineering students. Existing assessment tools, such as the scenario-based SelfKnowledge Inventory of Lif...
متن کاملAc 2010-2057: Joint Math-engineering Projects to Facilitate Calculus Success in First Year Students
It has been observed that most first year engineering students seem to enjoy and often perform well in their project and project-oriented freshman engineering course, but seem to have difficulty and often perform poorly in their first calculus course. Working from the perception that first year engineering students do not make the connection between what they learn in calculus and the problems ...
